We want to provide you with as much information about Crypton as we can. If you don't find the answer to your question here, please contact us.
Q: Is Crypton a fabric?
A: Yes. It is an engineered textile made with pre-tested and approved fabrics that have specific fiber and construction requirements that deliver consistent performance, known as Crypton Super Fabric. The fibers are permanently transformed with stain and microbial protection before they receive an integrated (non-laminated) moisture barrier.
Q: Can Crypton technology be applied to other commercial applications?
A: Yes! We’ve applied our amazing stain, odor and microbial resistant technology to carpeting, wall fabrics, mattress fabrics and leather. Click here for details
Q: What separates Crypton from laminated fabrics?
A: Crypton has an integrated backing that will never separate, permanently enhancing the performance of the fabric. Unlike Crypton, laminated fabric can delaminate, creating a pocket where germs can grow and moisture can pool, compromising the performance of the fabric.
Q: Can any fabric be “Cryptonized”?
A: No. Our fabrics are woven and engineered in a specific way to ensure absolutely consistent results. That way, you know you are getting proven performance and can confidently tell the end-user that this fabric delivers on its promise.
Q: What tests must Crypton pass?
A: Be assured that with Crypton, you have the only fabric that meets or exceeds all of the following heavy duty requirements: stain resistance, water resistance, abrasion, tearing strength, breaking strength, seam slippage, flammability, and resistance to fungal and bacterial growth.
Q: What flammability requirements must Crypton pass?
A: All Crypton fabrics pass Cal 117, UFAC, NFPA 260. If you must pass more stringent requirements, we do make fabrics at the time of processing (not after) that will meet Cal 133 (with components), IMO RES 16-52A, Boston and New York fire codes, automotive, FMVSS302 and aviation FAR25-853. Tell your distributor that you need this, and they can order it to be processed accordingly.
Q: Can you use Crypton for outdoor applications?
A: Yes, you can purchase Crypton Outdoor. It has all the features of Crypton and uses high-UV fibers. Standard Crypton fabrics will provide 40+ hours of fade resistance; however, 400 hours is the recommended standard for continual outdoor use. While Crypton has been used successfully in protected outdoor areas, we recommend Crypton Outdoor when sun is an issue.
Q: What is the difference between Crypton and Crypton Green?
A: It is not in the chemistry that is used, but rather in the fiber content of the actual fabric. In order for fabrics to be given the Crypton Green seal, the select fiber must be either: 50-100% recycled; 100% heavy-metal-free polyester; 100% wool with heavy-metal-free dyes; or 100% polypropylene. The end product must also meet Section 01350 emissions requirements.
Q: Do Crypton fabrics have VOCs, including formaldehyde or PFOA?
A: Crypton fabrics are third-party-certified for having ultra-low or no VOCs (volatile organic compounds that can be emitted over time into the air, adversely affecting indoor air quality). PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) is not used in the manufacture of Crypton Super Fabrics or INCASETM. Our state-of-the art chemistry allows our fabrics to be free of PFOA (no quantifiable level with a detection limit of 20 ppb).
Q: Is Crypton covered by any warranty?
A: Yes. We offer a five-year warranty on our moisture barrier. What that means for you is that we absolutely stand by the statement that our fabric will remain spill, moisture, bacteria and odor-free!
Q: How wide is Crypton fabric?
A: Crypton is 54" wide.
Q: Where can I source Crypton?
A: Architects and designers can source Crypton through one of our distributors. All of them are listed on our website.
Q: Can I be allergic to Crypton?
A: No. We don’t use chemistry that comes off of the fabric, but highly allergic individuals may want to check with their doctor. Some Crypton fabrics use acrylic latex, but never rubber latex.
Q: What are some of the bacteria and microbes that Crypton protects against?
A: Crypton fabrics prohibit the growth of molds like Aspergillus niger and bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. Our fabric process also includes chemistry that prohibits bacteria and mold from spreading.
Q: Can Crypton be cleaned with soap and water?
A: Yes. While Crypton fabric is the easiest in the world to clean, it’s not self-cleaning. In reality, most new stains come off with a damp cloth and water. There is one suggested cleaning method that is universally and easily available – the use of enzyme detergent. A mild powdered enzyme detergent mixed with water is a very effective way to clean Crypton. Mix 5 parts water with 1 part enzyme detergent.

Q: How can Crypton be disinfectable?
A: Crypton is the only fabric deemed a non-porous surface, and after working with the EPA for years to develop a protocol for testing, Crypton can be disinfected when used in conjunction with our U.S. EPA-approved Crypton Disinfectant & Deodorizer.
Q: What else does Crypton make?
A: In addition to all of the beautiful upholstery fabrics, Crypton offers wall fabric, outdoor fabric, carpeting, mattress fabric, Leather powered by Crypton, INCASETM fabric treatment, aftermarket furniture protection and a growing list of consumer products.
